On Christmas Day in 1893, every man, woman and child in a remote gold mining town disappeared, belongings forsaken, meals left to freeze in vacant cabins, and not a single bone was ever found. One hundred thirteen years later, two backcountry guides are hired by a history professor and his journalist daughter to lead them into the abandoned mining town so that they can learn what happened. With them is a psychic, and a paranormal photographer—as the town is rumored to be haunted. A party that tried to explore the town years ago was never heard from again. What this crew is about to discover is that twenty miles from civilization, with a blizzard bearing down, they are not alone, and the past is very much alive.

" Ehhh, not that bad, but not that good either. Interesting enough to keep me reading, but by the ending I felt like the author was trying to see how many plot twists he could fit into a single novel. I would have enjoyed it more if the book had stayed the ghost story its beginnings hinted at. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Julie | 2/15/2014

" The story was there...but the author wasn't always so good at articulating it. It's been a long time since I've read a book where I had to stop and re-read a passage several times to figure out what the author was talking about. Aside from the issues with the flow, it was an interesting, eerie, story. "

" This book was very action-filled and the mystery had many twists, which I didn't see coming. I like that! It wasn't really about anything paranormal as I expected it to be, but instead was a psychological thriller with some very real antagonists! Well written and researched; I could easily visualize the ghost town in the mountains and the people who had once lived there. A VERY good read. I am highly recommending this book to my husband as I know he will enjoy the action/suspense scenes! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Mitch Cardella Trudel Du Mond | 2/2/2014

" the story was ok, but the author rambled on on on. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kristine Cornman | 1/16/2014

" Would have been better had not so many swear words been used that I doubt were used in the 1800s to begin with. It did keep my interest, or I would not have finished. "

" I found it difficult to rate this book. I enjoyed it and kept listening, but found the 1893 story and characters much more interesting than those of the present day story. I also thought the narrator, Luke Daniels, rather droned on at times. If the story telling and character development of the present day story line matched the quality of the 1893 story line, I probably would have given it 4 stars. "

" Very well written, toggling between 1999 and 1893, kept things in perspective and all came together in the end. Alot of killing but that was the basis of the book, what greedy people do both then and now! recommend reading it! "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Karen | 4/3/2011

" Holy smokes! This one is a thriller. There isn't a moment where the tension lets up.
A story told across a century. If you are a slow reader you may have to look back and see what happened in the previous century because it jumps time. But other than that it was a THRILLING read. "
