"4 star book here. There was some heartwrenching parts, keep me on the edge of my seat parts, and then the could not go to bed until I knew how it all ended - part. I won this book and am very glad that I did, not knowing if this is a book that my library will purchase. The book itself has a lot of whirlwind action, all taking place within about three years. Minke is summoned to nurse a sick distant relative - who dies not long after. Within days she is married to her boss (the husband of the deceased) and heading off to Argentina. Minke is really quite naive in the beginning and left to be that way until she starts standing her ground. She has quite the head on her shoulders and comes into her own in a great way. Our Minke is not one to give up, even when her young son is stolen she does not give in. When she is betrayed and all seems to be lost - that is when she shines. Minke finds her focus and strives on. I like how she changes through the story, we know she is easy going but has a tough side and a stand up for what she believes is right - we see this when she smacks around the daughter of the house. Then we see how it saves her in the end when she raises herself and her children up out of the muck her husband made for them in America. On to the next!!"

" Loved this book! It was based on the author's grandmother's life and it was just a great story from beginning to end. I REALLY enjoyed this! "

" Sometimes I read good reviews of a book and when I don't like it, I wonder what I missed. I can understand why some people might like this book but I am not one of them. I found the main character Minke to be stupid rather than naive and unsympathetic rather than a character I wanted to root for. The plot twists (her husband is a drug maker, her baby is stolen but it turns out the husband sold him for money) were unbelievable and preposterous rather than surprising. The supporting characters veered toward flat portrayals of good or evil. I did like the setting - rural Netherlands and then the pampas of Argentina (two places I haven't read about before) but found the plot too Lifetime moviesque and Minke too annoying for a heroine. Can definitely be skipped. "

" I finished this book last night after our power went off. It was a good book. I read on the back where the author got the idea from her grandmothers life. I almost gave up reading when the baby Zaf was kidnapped. Thankfully I didn't and the outcome was good. "

" I thought it was pretty good until the end. Things wrapped up a little too neatly for my taste but it was a good story. It' supposed to be based on the author's Grandmother's life but it might have been better if she'd made it a biography instead of a novel. "

" The story of Minka is loosely based on events in her grandmother's life. From Amsterdam to Argentina and finally to New York Minke van Aisma's life is a journey of consequences and survival in the 1900's. "
