A runaway best seller in France and winner of the 1991 Prix Interallie, Sebastien Japrisot's novel about World War I was acclaimed as a latter-day War and Peace by The New York Times.

Set during and after the First World War, A Very Long Engagement is the tale of a young woman's search for her fiance who she believes might still be alive despite having officially been reported as killed in the line of duty. Unable to walk since childhood, fearless Mathilde Donnay is undeterred in her quest as she scours the country for information about five wounded French soldiers who were brutally abandoned by their own troops.

A Very Long Engagement is a mystery, a love story, and an extraordinary portrait of life in France before and after the War.

" I watched the movie adaptation of this book first. I cried at the end of the movie and then searched to find the book. I read it and cried at the end of the book. I've read books and watched the movie adaptations and found that the books were much better than their film counterparts, but I disagree with A Very Long Engagement. Both mediums were worth it. "

" This is one of my favorite books. I love books with a mystery and even better if it is one of the mysteriies life gives you to solve. "

" Amazing Japrisot, such story. It almost didn't fit my small mind. I had to read it, then watch the movie (sublime, by the way - by Jean Pierre Jeunet), and then read it again in order to understand both book and movie. It took some while until I realize who was who - so many names, so many nicknames to these names - and it finally hit me: how genious this man can be. Amazing the way it all makes sense in the end. Educating. "

" I find this a hard book to review. On one hand, I liked the story and the heroine's efforts to get to the truth. I think the fact that the story relied on so many snippets of info, I found it hard to keep track of the clues and that diminished my enjoyment of the story. Probably if an option would rate this 2.5 stars. "

" While I found the story and characters themselves interesting, I had a hard time becoming engaged with the writing. I generally enjoy puzzles, love and war but it was largely stubbornness on my part that I read all the way through to see what happened. sadly, since I wasn't as engaged with the characters as I feel I should have been, the reward for the end was not as rewarding as it should have been. "

" A little slow moving as it sets up the plot, but an intriguing look at the time right after WWI and a really lovely mystery/love story. "

" Set in 1917, about five soldiers who officially have died in the line of duty but what really happened to them. Partly a mystery and partly a love story but particularly well done when it tells what happened from different points of view. "

" I enjoyed this story. I felt somewhat lost in the time line and setting as it was after World War I and I don't know my geography of Europe very well. It's sort of a mystery and is an enjoyable read. "

" This was a wonderful story, but a bit hard to keep the characters straight. The writing style reminded me a bit of Elegance of the Hedgehog...perhaps it's how it was translated from French? "

" I'm wondering if this book was better in french. A friend of mine who is french recommended it to me. I liked the book....it was just VERY long. Mathilde is trying to find out what happened to her fiance during WW1. She is very determined. It ends nicely but it was a very sad book! "

" The title says it all.. "very long..." I think something was lost in the translation to English. But, the ending was good, so overall, I guess I'm glad I stuck with it. I've heard the movie was much better! "

" French. WWI. Five French soldiers sacrificed by their own into no-man's-land -- punishment for "self-mutilation" to escape the insanity of the war. Did they all die there? The search for the truth. Wonderful tale, imaginatively told. "
