Along a blacked-out wartime street a girl is scurrying, a basket on one arm. As sirens begin and bombs crash down, she is filled with panic and, with a heavy heart, abandons her burden in a sheltered doorway, meaning to return later. Even as she disappears in the resulting chaos, the bundle in the basket begins to wail.

Years later, two young unfortunates meet on a November day. Martin has been desperately trying to hitch a lift along the lonely windswept road and when he sees a weeping girl in front of him, he hurries to catch her up. Rose and Martin become unlikely companions until they go their separate ways, not expecting to meet again. However, fate decrees otherwise... Download and start listening now!

" I really liked this book. Didn't know what to read after the last series I finished and totally went the other way. It's a little religious but loved it all the same. "

" This is an adult's Little House on the Prairie--charming, full of folks battling difficult times and persevering, strong women character's and a bit on the simplistic side. I enjoy it although sometimes it felt like a guilty pleasure. "

" Another fantasic book by Francine Rivers! It had me hooked by the first page. I'm usually not a huge fan of historical fiction (although this one was based on a true story) and it usually can't hold my attention for nearly 500 pages, but this book exceeded all expectations! Can't wait for the next one!!! "

" This was a very enjoyable, historical fiction book dealing with mother/daughter relationships over the course of three generations and on more than one continent. Thankfully, Francine Rivers had the foresight to include Marta's letters to Rosie frequently. They helped me sense the difference between some of Marta's actions and her actual thoughts, motivations, and reasons for doing things. If those had not been there to help me "see inside her head" I think I might have disliked Marta and perhaps not finished the book. Ms. Rivers does an excellent job in depicting how complex and multi-faceted even relationships between Christians are, and how what's apparent on the outside may not tell the whole story. I look forward to reading the second volume, Her Daughter's Dream. "

" There was too much stuff the wade through that could only encourage people to sin. Too much in it was not anything that should be in a Christian book. This is the first half of one book broken into a mini series. "

" I love this "epic" story & she says this is taken from her grandmother's life story. You will laugh & cry & won't be easy to wait for the 2nd book. :) "

" 3 and a half stars. I enjoyed this book, but had mixed feelings about it. I found the characters lack of communication very frustrating. But, I will probably listen to the second one too. "

" It was a very good book, very detailed, including the letters she wrote, it was very sad at points, rough life for all, but very intense. Took awhile to read, very long book. Felt sorry for the girls in this book, they are the ones who were sad most of the time. "
