Publisher Description

Elnora Comstock lives with her widowed mother at the edge of Limberlost Swamp. Her mother is harsh and critical of her daughter, but Elnora is a loving girl who befriends all creatures. She is especially drawn to the beautiful moths that flutter through the trees in Limberlost. Although Elnora longs to go to high school, she has no money to pay for tuition and books. When her cruel mother refuses to help, all seems lost, until Elnora learns she can sell the rare insects she collects. Still, her journey through high school and college will be full of challenges - and surprises. First published in 1909, Gene Stratton-Porter's classic tale is a marvelous lesson in the powers of compassion and determination. Whether you remember this book from your childhood, or are meeting it for the first time, Elnora's shining personality will capture your heart. Her gentle spirit is conveyed in each sentence by narrator Christina Moore.

"This is another book that I read because of my book club. We had the 1990 movie of this when my kids were growing up. They seemed to like it, but it never was a movie I was excited to watch. I didn't think I was going to like the book, and almost didn't read it. I thought I would be able to join in the conversation because of watching the movie many years ago. I second guessed myself thinking that it had been so many years since I had seen the movie, I would not remember all of the story line, so I decided I better read it. I am so glad I did! What a delightful story. Maybe some day there will be a movie made that is as good as the book. I would highly recommend this book."

" This was a popular book back in the very early 20th century, when it was written. It's dated but nevertheless quite interesting. The limberlost is a sort of swamp of 13,000 acres in Indiana (thank you wikipedia) and the girl, whose name I have forgotten. No, I remember, it was Elnora, lives on the edge with her crazy mother, where Elnora collects moths and excells in school. The mother is still pining the loss of her husband in the limberlost, and she resents Elnora, but truth be learned, her husband wasn't the pure soul she believed him to be... This becomes a love story, and it moves eventually to Mackinac Island, which sounds like quite the place to go in the early part of the 1900s. I'm glad I read this book for its historical significance, but I wuold only recommend it with reservations. "

" I was so glad to see this surface on one of my friends lists, as I had forgotten about it until then, and it was one of my absolute favorite books growing up!!! I haven't read it in about 10 years, at least, but I stand by my stock line----you can't un-love something! Five Stars! "

" I loved this book! It is a story of a girl who has no family except a mother who doesn't care about her at all. She overcomes so many difficulties and becomes such an amazing woman! I love all of the descriptions of nature and the beauty that she finds there... Great classic! "

" I finished it this morning. I had wondered if reading it from an old lady perspective might make me enjoy it less than when I read it from a teen-ager perspective. The answer is no--I love this book. The story is heart-warming and it tells of a moral code that we would all do well to live by! "

" Really hated the first 50 pages and the end was only so-so. As a linguist and a book proofreader, it was fun to see old fashioned punctuation and terms. After the first 50 pages I got more into it. It wasn't great or terrible, and it had some really good quotes. "
