"Anne Perry's William Monk is someone with whom we sympathize as he discovers after an attack of amnesia, due to a carriage accident, that he had not been exactly the sort of man he wishes he had been. Worse than that, he is not the detective he had been and it seems that if even he were, his political senses have taken leave of him since he quits the force over the disposition of a case. Laterly proven right, but out of a job, Monk wonders what will become of him. We applaud his efforts and sigh for his agonies. What a wonderful series!"

" I read many of the Monk books in my pre-foodreads days, and found them to be quite compelling. Whether it was the amnesia Monk had, and his trying to solve a mystery plus solve his own mystery, or Hester's fierce determination to maintain her nursing skills, worth, and strength of character, or some of all of the above, I don't know, but I enjoyed the series. That I fell off later in the game is probably only because my life circumstances made it more complicated to keep up with when new books came out. I'll probably get back to the series again some day, or listen on audio book. "

" Another grear job. I am enjoying the charcter Hester more and more. I have not read these in order of printing and I really recomend that you do. Things that I read in later books make a lot more sence now. The books aren't dependant on each other but they do support each other. "

" This was a very good mystery set in the victorian era. the author made you feel as if you were really there by letting you feel the frustration of the characters based on their social classes. It is a dark story with a surprise ending worth the read to get to. "

" This book was very slow getting into it, but finally started picking up about 1/2 way through. In the end, I enjoyed it, but there were parts that were very tedious. This is a Victorian age murder mystery. The characters are interesting. I really like the main female character, Hester. "

" I loved this story! It really showed the social injustice of Victorian england. I really like the Monk character, but I love Hester. She is my kind of woman, I guess since we are both Miss Nightingale's nurses. I can't wait to get to the library to pick up the next book in this series. "

" In the second book in the series, Perry delves more into Hester's story. Perry is clearly very interested in the plight of the Victorian woman and Hester is a great character. The mystery in this second novel is slightly less mysterious, but the characters are still very compelling. "
