Publisher Description

Eva Ibbotson, Smarties Prize winner for Journey to the River Sea and finalist for both the Whitbread Award and the Carnegie Medal, sets this compelling story in 1912 England, where 19-year-old Harriet Morton leads a dreary existence. Her ballet class is her only joy. When Father won't let her travel on a ballet tour to South America, Harriet creates a clever ruse that covers her escape and triggers an experience far beyond her dreams.

"A sweeping story about a girl named Harriet who grows up in 1912 Cambridge, under the harsh rule of her strict and conservative father and aunt. When offered the opportunity to dance ballet with a Company that is going to perform overseas in the Amazon for the rich, Harriet sneaks off and finally follows her hearts wishes. There, free from the restraints of her father, her love of dancing grows while she also falls in love with a British exile. The beginning of the story that takes place in England is slow, but after Chapter three the book really takes off. Loved it!!!"

" Good, enjoyable, but somewhat predictable- I knew everything was going to work out okay in the end. I am a sucker for the ballerina books, though. "

" Not as good as I had hoped. An okay story, but seemed juvenile. Could have done without some of the promiscuity (even though it was only implied). "

" This is AS good if not better than "A Countess Below Stairs", although very different. Lots of ballet/dancing loving, which is always great. Also, the hero (Rom) could be Edward Cullen's twin, which is extremely wierd since the 'villian's name is Edward. Again, 10 stars outof 5. This is the type of book that makes me glad reading and writing and books were invented. And it makes me thank God for romance. "

" Eva Ibbotson's books can get predictable, with many similar characters cropping up in each one, but when the storylines are as sweet and romantic as this you really don't care. The characters were vividly drawn, I loved the development of the romance between Harriet and Rom, and as usual for an Ibbotson novel, the supporting cast were all just as interesting and engaging as the main characters. Sweet, historical fun. "

" I liked this book. It was a really quick read. My only problem was I didn't understand a lot of the words. Some of it was in different languages that I felt were not translated. Once I got into the hang of not always understanding everything, I liked it. "

" This was such a sweet little book. A little old-fashioned, but seeing as it was written I think in the early 20th century, it should be. The romance was perfect, and who couldn't help but love our sweet and hardworking heroine? Just the right amount of drama and confusion. "
